Syllabus

  • Course Description:
    • This course is about learning how to teach students how to use the Internet for educational purposes and keeping themselves and others safe from online predators. There are various types of dangers on the Internet that can harm the systems personal data and are unethical. This course will educate primary teachers on how to teach Internet Safety and netiquette (Internet etiquette) for students in grades K-2.

  • Course Objectives:
    • Objective 1 - Teachers will be able to identify and define what is Internet Safety and the county's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).
    • Objective 2 - Teachers will be able to help prevent Internet dangers and create a safe teaching enviornment both in the classroom and online.
    • Objective 3 - Teachers will be able to create their own Internet Safety Plan using various types of multimedia software to enhance student learning.
    • Objective 4 - Teachers will be able to give parents advice and resources about teaching their children about Internet safety at home.

Session 1

What is Internet Safety?
In this session, teachers will assess and discuss what they THINK is Internet safety, and what IS Internet safety.

Session 2

What are the county's policies and standards with Internet use?
Teachers will view and assess PGCPS' Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and various school AUPs that are already made.

Session 3

How can we prevent Internet dangers? (Software)
Teachers will discuss various types of software that can be used to prevent outside predators from harming the school system.

Session 4

How do you create a safe environment? (Part I - Using Websites)
Teachers will discuss  and compare various types of multimedia websites to teach students about Internet Safety.

Session 5

How do you create a safe environment? (Part II - Google Docs and Smart Notebook)
Teachers will view and practice using different types of multimedia software to create their own Internet Safety for their students.

Session 6

How do you create a safe environment? (Part III - Creating Internet Safety Plans)
Teachers will discuss the types of students they are teaching, where their students come from, and how they will create an Internet Safety Plan that meets their students' needs. Teachers will then use the rest of the session to brainstorm an Internet Safety plan that they will implement in their classroom. They must use one or more of the multimedia discussed in previous sessions. Teachers will collaborate with each other during their creation process using Internet Safety Plan Brainstorming Questions to guide them.

Session 7

How do you create a safe environment? (Part IV - Creating Plans Continued)
Teachers will be given more time in this session to create their own Internet Safety Plan using one or more of the multimedia discussed in previous sessions with their type of audience in mind. Teachers will collaborate with each other during their creation process.

How do you create a safe environment? (Part V - Creating Lessons Continued)
Teachers will be given more time in this session to create their own Internet Safety lesson using one or more of the multimedia discussed in previous sessions.

Teachers will present their plans to each other and address the quality and effectiveness of their plan.

Session 10

How can we prevent Internet Dangers at home?
Teachers will discuss how parents can be involved in their child's Internet safety. Trainees will also look at additional resources that can be used to teach Internet safety to young children.
